8th grade Science
Welcome to Science!
Hello Bulldogs! I am very excited to welcome you to our 8th grade class website. I hope this provides a quick and easy place to find everything you need to be successful in class.
Weather
In this unit we will be going over air masses, fronts, pressure systems, weather map symbols, and how to predict weather using weather maps.Weather Short Cuts -Vocabulary Word Wall-Weather Lessons
Space
In the Universe portion of our space unit we will go over components of the universe including galaxies and how to classify stars using the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram.Space
In the seasons portion of our space unit we will review rotation and revolution, look at the tilt of Earth's axis and how it causes the seasons. We will also learn to identify the season based on our relative position around the sun.Space
In the moon phases portion of our space unit we will learn to identify moon phases based on which side the light is on and it's shape. We will also learn to identify the moon phase based on it's relative position to the sun and Earth. Finally, we will learn how to predict moon phases.Moon Phases Short cuts -Vocabulary Word Wall-Moon Phases Lessons
Geology
In plate tectonics we will learn the history and development of the theory of plate tectonics, how the plates move and the crustal features that occur because of plate movement.Geology
In topoography we will learn how to read topographic maps.
Physics
In the forces portion of our physics unit we will understand the difference between balanced and unbalanced forces. Then we will learn how to calculate the net forces acting on an object.Balanced and Unbalanced Forces -Vocabulary Word Wall -Balanced and Unbalanced Forces LessonsPhysics
In the speed, velocity, and acceleration portion of our physics unit we will learn the differences between the 3 and how to identify them using real world examples.Physics
In the Newton's Laws portion of our physics unit we will learn about the 3 laws and how to identify them using real world examples. We will also learn how to calculate to find force, mass, and acceleration.
Chemistry
In the chemical formulas and reaction portion of our chemistry unit we will learn what a chemical formula is and how to count atoms and elements in a chemical formula. We will learn about the law of conservation of mass and how chemical equations will have to follow this law. Lastly, we will go over chemical reactions and how to identify evidences of chemical reactions.Chemistry
In the atomic structure portion of our chemistry unit we will go over protons, neutrons, and electrons. We will learn their mass, charge, and location in the atom. We will look at an element square on the periodic table and learn how to tell the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons it has (for neutral atoms).Chemistry
In the periodic table portion of our chemistry unit we will learn the pattern of the periodic table, including groups and periods, and the reactivity of alkali metals, halogens and noble gasses. We will also look at the characteristics of metals, metalloids, and non-metals.
Ecology
In our ecology unit we will look at biotic and abiotic factors, limiting factors, short and long term environmental changes, and how humans impact the ocean environment.Ecology -Vocabulary Word Wall-Ecology Lessons
