Atmosphere
The envelope of gases surrounding the earth. This is where weather occurs.
Weather
The state of the atmosphere, describing if it is hot or cold, wet or dry, calm or stormy, clear or cloudy. Weather can change quickly, day to day or even hour by hour.
Ex: It is going to rain today.
Climate
Long-term average of weather. Average temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, and precipitation over a long period of time.
Ex: Houston has hot summers.
Weather map
A map or chart showing the condition of the weather in a certain area at a given time.
High pressure
Happy weather
Causes air to sink which results in clear, sunny skies.
Winds blow clockwise
Low pressure
Lousy weather
Causes air to rise which forms water droplets
Results in clouds, rain, storms
Winds blow counter-clockwise
Cold Front
Cold air moves in the direction the triangles are pointing (aka icicles).
Cold air is dense, it sinks and so pushes the warm air up.
Moves quickly and produces abrupt changes in weather, the faster it moves the more intense the storms are.
Warm Front
Warm air moves in the direction of the half circles (aka little suns).
Warm air overtakes cold air and rises over the cold air because it is less dense.
Warm fronts move more slowly than cold fronts.
Stationary front
When a cold front and a warm front meet and neither of them are powerful enough to move the other.
Generally stays in place for days.
land breeze
A breeze blowing toward the sea from the land, happens at night.
Sea breeze
A breeze blowing toward land from the sea, happens during the day.
