Balanced and Unbalanced Forces Vocabulary
Force
Strength or energy that, when unopposed, will change the motion of an object. A push or a pull.
balanced force
Individual forces that are of equal magnitude and opposite direction. They cancel each other out and so the net force will always equal 0 (zero).
No change in motion. This does not mean that an object cannot be moving. An airplane, moving at a CONSTANT speed and direction, will balanced. Just like a book sitting on a shelf and not moving is balanced.
Unbalanced force
Forces that cause a change in the motion of an object. These forces can be equal to anything except 0.
CHANGE is the keyword here.
Examples: A bird landing. A car speeding up. A leaf falling from a tree.
net force
The sum of all the forces that act upon an object.
If the forces are going in opposite directions you will subtract, what ever left over is the net force.
If the forces are going in the same direction you will add, your sum is the net force. Object will move in the direction the greater force is moving in.
